Employee Observation Checklist:

  • Workplace control – adjust server software to regulate use of Internet by employees. Control how business time is utilized on every computer (monitor computer activity of employees by special software, so no personal socializing can be tolerated during labour hours);
  • Workplace attendance and discipline – control check-in and check-out time of the employees daily, with a help of special journals, so you can definitely know whether your employees arrive and leave on-time;
  • Supervision – make sure activity, behavior, and needs of employees are exposed to attentive and proactive supervision, especially while people are new in the organization. Assign some “buddy” employees or managers who can correct behavior of employees or can help them to get adapted in new environment;
  • Set expectations clearly – thoroughly explain to your employees what service and results you expect from them, and how they need to perform for this. Of course some things are just due, but everything which is above common requirements should be articulated beforehand. Don’t make “surprises” to employee by asking them for something you never mentioned about;
  • Always keep yourself (if you are an immediate manager) aware of what your employees are doing at every specific period of time (just ensure they have some essential tasks to work at). Have someone competent who can keep abreast of employee assignments and will track their execution;
  • Check employee reports and compare them to other evidence of performance provided by the evaluating manager. Track whether the same episodes of employee performance are reflected consistently and fairly throughout different sources and viewpoints;
  • Give objective feedbacks to employees – assure the employees are early informed about their insufficient performance, along with detailed comments and suggestions on any work items or episodes that are done improperly. Prevent any serious failures in work by early correction of employee efforts; 
  • Face-to-face meetings – periodically meet your employees in person to discuss situation with their jobs, performance and achievements. Ask them to express their personal opinions about organization of working processes and team. Use these meetings to understand whether your employees are satisfied with working conditions and what they expect from further career;
  • Communicate with fellow employees – consider what the employees think about working with each other. Know whether they feel comfortable in collaboration;
  • Communicate with customers – consider opinion, likes and dislikes of the customers. Know whether they are satisfied by the services your employees provide;
  • Be attentive to negative signals – do not pester employees with captious supervision, but.....
